I lived in Italy when i was around 4.... i remember them having stockings over trees and there was like this old lady who would give you coal if you were bad and leave you a toy if you were good... im not sure if she was a witch or something but yea... that's my answer and of course since they are Italian they eat

The Usual religious customs are observed- as this is Rome- and Roman Catholicism prevails- also an unusual martial touch. In not-too-distant times a huge ( my guess 305MM ( l2 inch) siege howitzer was wheeled-up to a prominent vantage point and prepared for firing- at precisely 2359.30 seconds- a star shell was fired- arching over Rome and simulating the Christmas Star! One of my aunts remembered this in the Old Country. Fireworks of more mundane types figure in other Italian religious celebrations- get a Bang out of Christmas.
