At that time most of the colonies were agrarian and the overwhelming amount of jobs for people centered on that industry. The existence of a metropolitan lifestyle was very small and was usually centered upon maritime mercantile exchange. Mass production, at least in the US, had little impact. For the US it had to wait for things like the power loom, the cotton gin, the turret lathe, steam power and the threshing machine.
