I think that the book says 10w-40 I'm not positive! I use Royal Purple 10w-30 in my 400ex. Its been good stuff so far! Beware! Always make sure the oil you put in there is for "WET CLUTCHES" your clutch is made from fiber and it will absorb the oil! I made the terrible mistake of using Pennzoil after 45 min. My clutch was slipping like hell! Just i cant stress that enough be sure your oil is for a wet clutch system. If it says JASO MA on the back of the bottle your good!
GN4 Honda oil only.
A Honda 400ex is rated to hold 5 quarts of motor oil. This includes the oil stored in the oil pan and the filter which are replaced during an oil change.
On a 400ex the engine and transmission share the same oil. So when you change the oil in the engine you are changing the transmission oil as well. That is why you need an ATV or motorcycle oil designed for wet clutches.
