GM recommends SAE 5w20 weight.
While GM hasn't recommended it in the past Most synthetic oils are excellent and greatly extend engine oil life. You don't need to change oil as often with them. The drawbacks are that they are expensive and if you can't find an extended life oil filter you will still need to change the oil filter every 5000 miles. One other thing about synthetics is that they are so consistent that if you have a place to leak they will leak. Regular motor oils will clump a little on gaskets but synthetics won't.
