It depends a lot on the engine. 1.7 suggests Honda, which means full synthetic is the best choice. But is an enormous number of 2.0 engines, very different from each other, so it's impossible to say. If it's nothing very advanced (such as a turbo, or a very high-revving unit), full synthetic will do (though it may be overkill). Oil is cheap. Don't skimp.

It depends on what kind of shape your engine is in. If your engine leaks go with a 20 40 if your engine doesnt leak go with a 10w 30.
