The North Atlantic Treaty Organisation or NATO is an organisation first established in 1949 by a treaty signed by Belgium, Canada, Denmark, France, Holland, Iceland, Italy, Luxembourg, Norway, Portugal, the UK and the USA. Greece and Turkey became member in 1952, West Germany in 1955 and Spain in 1982. Poland, Czech Republic and Hungary joined in 1999.

NATO was established with its headquarters in Brussels, Belgium, as the political and military alliance which is intended to provide common security for all its member nations. The senior military authority in NATO, under the NATO Council and DPC is the Military Committee comprising the chief of defence staffs of each member country other than Iceland which has no army.
