That is a question that you will get numerous answers too. There are many good waxes out there. I personally use McGuires products and love them. Wax is a protectant, and if used reguarly they are all good. Some just go on easier and protect longer than others. An alternative to wax is Acrylic paint conditioners, which are better for acrylic paints than waxes. Pure liquid non abrasive and self leveling, conditioners are absorbed into the paint. They make the paint stronger as opposed to covering it up with a wax built up.

If it's bare wood, then you can use either an oil based or a 100% acrylic paint over a similar primer. If it's already been painted, then you'll want to know what kind of paint is on the surface, and then coat it with that type of paint. If you want to use latex over an oil surface, sand the oil surface, prime with an acrylic primer, then coat with your 100% acrylic paint.

It depends on what type of painting you are doing, or what kind of paint you are using. But, most likely, you are using acrylic paint, and when using acrylic paint, you should not use any paper at all. Instead, you need to use canvas to paint on because paper will start to shrivel up when you paint on it. So, just use canvas, which you can buy at a crafts store like Micheal's or JOANN for the low price of about $25-$35. Your welcome!!

Paint can protect iron from rusting, especially if it is the right kind of paint - you would not want to use a water based acrylic paint, since the water in the paint would promote rusting, rather than preventing it.
