That was the year when he came to public notice - earning his pun-nickname 'Unconditional Surrender' (US) after the battle of Fort Donelson.

At the first big battle - Shiloh - he was much criticised for being caught napping and almost allowing his army to be pushed into the Tennessee river.

But the situation in the West improved steadily because of him, and by the end of the year he was on course to liberate the Mississippi.
