Omaha Beach was guarded by the 352nd German division - excellent battle hardened soldiers armed with well dug in machine guns and 88's and 75's in concrete casements. The beach was mined and demolition clearance crews lost almost half their men in the first hour of the day. The LCT's bringing 30 supporting tanks stopped and launched almost 4 miles offshore. 27 tanks were lost . By the end of the first day the 1st and 29th were getting off the beach at huge cost of casualties.

The Germans had very well protected guns that could enfilade the beach. These guns were extremely strong and thick concrete casings and had even survived the earlier naval barrage.
