Some venomous species closely resemble nonvenomous ones. Because there are many species of venomous snake and even more nonvenomous ones it would not be practical to list them here. Vipers generally have thick bodies, keeled scales, and blunt arrow-shaped heads. Rattlesnakes are a unique subset of vipers that use loose skin on their tails to produce a rattling or buzzing sound as a warning. Cobras, belonging to the highly venomous elapid family are distinct in that when threatened they will raise the front section and spread their bodies to cproduce the hood that makes them famous. Boas and pythons, by contrast, are nonvenomous, however some of the largest species can still kill a human by constriction. Coloration and patterns on these snakes vary but many have a splotched brown appearance, though some vipers have similar coloration. The best way to identify a snake is to have a field guide of local or regional species, which will generally tell if a species if venomous. If you have any doubt as to whether a snake is venomous or not, leave it alone.
