Chickens love slightly damp soil that they can scratch and dust bathe in. The ground they live on should be varied though: they love eating grass, as well as many other plants. Chickens like pretty much any sort of ground that they can dig in, rest on, and find insects on. About the only thing they don't like to live on is hard ground like concrete.
