Spartacus is one of those shadowy figures of history. He did one big thing and untill then, virtually nothing. His story is the basis for much fiction about him based on very little fact. The truth is that we simply do not know much about him and so he's fair game for novelists and movie makers. What we do know, is this: he was a charismatic leader who talked others into joining him in a gladiatorial revolt. He was smart and cleaver enough to elude the under manned Romans and to rampage up and down Italy. As far as the type of soldier that he was, he is often referred to as a Thracian. But he was also a gladiator and there was a type of gladiator called a Thrax who was also called a Thracian which asks the question of weather he was an actual native of Thrace or if "Thracian" was his style of fighting.
The name "Spartacus" is a Latin name. It had no nationality as such. The rebel gladiator Spartacus was said to be from Thrace and also was said to have served in the Roman army. Many auxiliaries either Latinized their names or changed them completely to a Latin (Roman) name.
It is said that Spartacus was an ex-soldier. Some historians think that he fought against the Romans while others think that he was actually an auxiliary in the Roman army.
The "Spartacus" television series consists of four main seasons: "Spartacus: Blood and Sand," "Spartacus: Gods of the Arena," "Spartacus: Vengeance," and "Spartacus: War of the Damned." There are no additional series or spin-offs beyond these four. The series concluded in 2013, wrapping up the story of Spartacus and the rebellion.

From what little we know of Spartacus, we can assume that he fought human animals. He was supposed to have been a Thracian soldier. If true, he would have been skilled in combat. He also could have been a "Thrax" or a "Thracian" gladiator which was a style of fighting. At any rate, neither one of these gladiatorial designations fought animals.
Spartacus kills his best friend to spare him of the agonies of crucifixion. This happened after the Spartacus slave army was defeated and Spartacus and his friend were captured.
