When Franklin was a boy, he went to Groton school for boys. His cousin, Theodore Roosevelt, visited Groton school and gave a speech about politics. That, I think, is one reason. Now here is another. When Franklin was only 5 or 6 he visited the President of the United States of America. That president, said to him; "I know this is a silly wish, but you will never become the President of the United States." That maybe triggered his determination to become President.
He was a very good political leader and he jumped at the chance to be president. His wife Eleanor did not want to have any part of this.
He got polio
He had to become a president. He worried none of the people would vote for him. He could not walk on his own anymore. He was in a wheelchair. He went to a pool in Warm Springs very often.
