For Type A school buses, it'll depend on what the chassis manufacturer typically uses... a Type A school bus on a General Motors chassis which can still be reasonably expected to be in service will have, depending on model year, a 4L80E, Allison 1000, or 5L70E, or 6L80E, for example.
