You can drive, but it's much more comfortable if you take the bus. From the airport, you take a taxi to TAPO (Mexico City bus station), and then go to the ADO (that's the largest bus company, travels to every place), and if you can take the ADO GL (Grand Luxe), it's very nice.
I think it's a 3 or 4 hour ride, I was there 5 or 6 years ago. You'll enjoy it.
