An electromagnetic wave is a wave all on it's own. They are waves that do not require a medium (any material a wave can travel through, such as a rope or a hose). Light does not need to travel through anything in order to reach your eyes. Thus you have an electromagnetic wave.

Anything in the electromagnetic spectrum.

Gamma rays

Xrays

Ultraviolet

Visible Light

Infra-red

Microwaves

Radio Waves

They are characterised by the fact they are all transmitted in packets of energy called photons. Sound is not an electromagnetic wave, nor is ultrasound or any physical oscillation.
