There are literally thousands of species of fish. Many species will mix with others that require similar water parameters but some are predators and/or territorial and must be kept alone. My advice is to go and see a few aquaria and observe which species are kept together. If your local pet shop has a display tank or two that would be a good place to start. Please remember that the most common cause of fish death in home aquaria is bad water. This is usually caused by either overcrowding or poor filtration or lack of water changes. The rules to observe are .:- 1 inch of fish needs at least 1 gallon of water :- Every tank needs a permanently running cycled filter. :- Every tank needs at least 50% of its water changed every week. If you follow the above rules your fish should do OK. If you miss out on any of the above then I can guarantee that your fish will be constantly getting sick and will live shortened lifespans.
