They stole things like:
- gold
- money (gold dublums)
- jewels
- swords
- ships
- maidens
- clothes
and they kill for fun or to steal the treasure.

Most did not, with a few exceptions. Most pirates were anxious to divide up the loot and use what they pilfered from other people's boats. And they rarely discovered gold or silver. Usually they stole food or other perishables that would have been useless, rotten, or spoiled had they buried it. William Kidd pilfered gold and silver from a boat sailing from the Far East. Kidd buried the treasure in Long Island, NY. The gold and silver were confiscated when Kidd was arrested for piracy.
