The play 'Macbeth' was written about two kings of Scotland: King Duncan I [d. August 14, 1040]; and his successor, King Macbeth [d. August 15, 1057]. Additionally, two other kings were referenced as King Duncan's sons. One was the subsequent King Malcolm III [d. November 13, 1093]. The other was the subsequent King Donald III [d. 1099]. The play was written for King James I [June 19, 1566-March 27, 1625] of England and Ireland and VI of Scotland. In the play, the character of Banquo was represented as the ancestor of a long line of kings. That line supposedly culminated in the person of King James.
