In winning the Spanish-American war, in 1898, America gained temporary control of Cuba and indefinite colonial authority of Puerto Rico, Guam and the Philippines from the Spanish.

In 1946 the Philippines gained independence from the U.S, but Guam and Puerto Rico are still today U.S territories.

They also got a neverending headache because of Cuba.

The Treaty of Paris ended the Spanish American War. Spain gave Cuba it's freedom and ceded the Philippines, Puerto Rico, and the island of Guam in the Pacific Ocean to the United States.

Spain giving Cuba its independence was in essence giving it to the US because fo the Teller Amendment.
