There are 4 official languages in Switzerland. In order of the percentage of the population which speak them they are: German (63.7%), French (20.4%), Italian (6.5%) and Romansh (0.5%). Different languages are spoken in different parts of the country.
Switzerland has four official languages: German (63.7% total population share, with foreign residents; 72.5% of residents with Swiss citizenship, in 2000) in the north, east and center of the country; French (20.4%; 21.0%) to the west; Italian (6.5%; 4.3%) in the south.[114] Romansh, a Romance language spoken locally by a small minority (0.5%; 0.6%) in the southeastern canton of Graubünden, is designated by the Federal Constitution as a national language along with German, French and Italian (Article 4 of the Constitution), and as official language if the authorities communicate with persons of Romansh language (Article 70), but Federal Laws and other official acts do not need to be decreed in this language. The federal government is obliged to communicate in the official languages, and in the federal parliament simultaneous translation is provided from and into German, French and Italian.[115]

Swiss German is the standard language, but the locals speak a dialect known as Basel-Deutsch which is very hard to understand.

As Basel borders on France, and is not too far from the French-speaking part of Switzerland, you get a lot of French-speaking visitors. There are also a lot of commuters from France. But the official language is German.

Note it is usual to use the German spelling "Basel" in English as well. "Basle" is not used much.

Switzerland has 4 official languages:

  1. German (64%)
  2. French (20%)
  3. Italian (7%)
  4. Romansch (0.5%)

Switzerland Has 3 sign languages:

  1. Swiss-German Sign Language (used in Romansch-speaking areas as well)
  2. Swiss-French Sign Language
  3. Swiss-Italian Sign Language

For a relatively small nation, Switzerland has a lot of language diversity. It is about 16,000 square miles, a little less than Vermont and New Hampshire combined.

Most widely spoken are different dialects of Swiss-German, spoken by about 64%, mostly in the middle and eastern parts of Switzerland. Secondly around 20% of Swiss have French as a mother tongue, most of them reside in the western parts of Switzerland. Then there is also Italian, spoken by 7% only in the South of Switzerland. And in the South-Eastern part of Switzerland you can find Romansch, a romance language spoken only in Switzerland. Only Around 0.5% still speak this language.

English is widely known in Switzerland, spoken by about 61% of the population

After English, Serbo-Croatian and Albanian are the most-used non-national languages.
