The most populous West European nations are Germany, Italy, Spain, France and the United Kingdom, so the languages spoken most are German, Italian, Spanish, French and English. Germany has the highest population at around 82.5 million, so German is probably the most spoken native language. However, English is by far the most popular choice as a second language worldwide and a large percentage of the European population can speak it to at least some degree. Since the population of the United Kingdom stands at around 61.6 million (the vast majority of whom speak English, though it is just one of several offical UK languages), English is probably the most spoken overall even when those inhabitants of Austria and Switzerland who speak German are added to the German total and those from Belgium and Switzerland who speak French are added to the French total.

Also The most popular language family is Indo-European.

There are a huge number of languages spoken in Northern Europe and it depends what you class as Northern Europe.

The UK, Republic of Ireland, Norway, Sweden, Finland and Denmark would probably all be considered Northern European countries. Within these countries there are a number of languages and probably some I don't know about.

In Ireland as well as English Gaelic is also taught and spoken, with the Gael-tac on the west coast of Ireland leading this.

In the UK as well as English, Welsh and ethnic Scottish languages are also spoken.

Norwegian,Danish, Swedish and Finish are all spoken in their respective countries.

Other countries that might be considered Northern European include:

France- French

Germany-German

Belgium- French/Flemish

Netherlands- Dutch/Flemish

Luxenbourg-French

Poland-Polish/German

Latvia-Latvian/Russian

Estonia-Estonian/Russian

Lithuania-Lithuanian/Russian

The EU uses English as its default language though French and German are also widely used across the continent.

Switzerland- Uses several languages including French, German, Italian and others
The most spoken languages of Northern Europe include Swedish, Finnish, Danish, Norwegian, Lithuanian, Latvian, Estonian, and Icelandic. Other minority languages include English, German, Russian, French, and Dutch.

There are typically five countries in Northern Europe (although the UN lists eight):

Denmark

Finland

Iceland

Norway

Sweden

Every country has their own language as their official language, similar to the citizenship of the country: Danish, Finnish, Icelandic, Norwegian, and Swedish (Swedish is official in both Sweden and Finland).

The largest spoken language in Northern Europe is actually not any of these languages. It's English. Well over half the people in Denmark, Sweden, Finland, and Norway speak English (no statistics available for Iceland). However, of the official languages of Northern Europe, Swedish is the most spoken.
