  2. Aramaic - this was the language of the common people and uneducated, its origin is a form of Chaldean that the Jews returning from the Babylonian captivity learned in Babylon
  3. Hebrew - this was the Jewish religious language
  4. Latin - this was the language of the Roman rulers and the official Law Courts
  5. Many less commonly used languages from nearby lands also existed

In the land of Israel, the Jews generally spoke Aramaic, while in the diaspora, they spoke Greek, as did the gentiles of the region. All Jews also knew and used Hebrew, in Torah-learning, Torah-scroll reading, and prayers.

A:Hebrew was not a language in everyday use at the time of Jesus, but was used for religious texts and ceremonies. Palestinian Jews, in Galilee and Judea, spoke Aramaic, a West Semitic language very similar to Hebrew. Jews of the diaspora mainly spoke Greek.

A:Jews and Samaritans spoke Aramaic. Gentiles spoke Greek Koine. The Roman officials and Roman soldiers spoke Latin, but generally also Greek and perhaps Aramaic. Hebrew was used as a liturgical language in the Temple and synagogues.
