Why is statutory law important to politicians? Because local politians (i.e. guvernors) have direct influence to these written laws within a state. In difference to the constitutional laws that have the same impact across the country. For example the death penalty laws between the states of U.S. differ while the voting system as a consitutional law is the same for all states.
If by "illegal" you mean "against the law," then none. There is no state in the US where same-sex marriage is considered a crime. In fact, in most US states, same-sex marriage is legally recognized. Common law is civil law and the principles of common law are developed through fairness and equity. Modern legal codes are derived from common law principals. Modern common law treats all people the same and all have the same rights. Sharia law is religious law and an extension of extreme patriarchal control. It is not based on fairness and logic. Women do not have equal protection or rights under Sharia.
