Black Codes
Black Codes were laws that restricted the rights of freedmen in the South after the Civil War. These laws imposed limitations on their ability to work, travel, own property, and participate in society as full citizens. The Black Codes aimed to maintain white supremacy and control over the newly freed African Americans.

The black codes were a set of regulation for freedmen. They restricted their economic rights, they couldn't vote, they couldn't hold office or serve on a jury and they could not receive a public education. These Black Codes were enacted by restored white governments in the South. These laws were harsh and severely restricted Black citizens. Examples were laws that required Blacks to be given a permit in order to take employment in other than field work or domestic services.

African-Americans originally came to the US as slaves, but slavery was abolished around the end of the American Civil war. (Slavery officially ended on December 6th, 1865) However, most of the Southern White population did not like this change, so they used racist laws (such as the Jim Crow Laws) to "keep the blacks in their place". The white population believed they were superior to the black population, so they enforced racist laws and restricted their rights.
