Japan realized they had no chance of winning. The Soviet Union was ready to invade.The US was ready to invade even farther into Japan. What really made Japan surrender though was the dropping of the two atomic bombs on Nagasaki and Hiroshima.

The second nuclear bomb, detonated over the city of Nagasaki on August 9, 1945. The Japanese Emperor had vacillated over surrendering after the first atomic bomb was dropped on Hiroshima on August 6, 1945, because the military commanders had doubted that the Americans could possibly have another bomb. The second bomb prompted the Emperor to surrender, even against the advice of his military advisers.
