How long does it take tsunami waves to hit Hawaii from Alaska?

I think there are several factors in determining it, like, where the epi center of the earthquake originated, and how deep the earthquake was, also I think there are some kind of bouys in the ocean that can measure stuff.

What instruments do they use to categorize tsunamis?

Tsunamographs are anchored, ocean-bottom apparatuses developed by the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration and used as part of the Deep-ocean Assessment and Reporting of Tsunamis system to measure and categorize tsunamis. The ocean-bottom apparatus recognizes and reports changes in pressure that occur when water levels change, and then transmit a signal to bouys which measure wave height and transmit all of that information to satellites. This information is used to track and forecast the progress of tsunami waves, which can then help categorize the strength and speed of each tsunami.

What is the purpose of the Coastguards?

To be the guardians of the sea. To perform law enforcement ie drug interdiction, migrant interdiction, fisheries. Perform rescues at sea whether by boat, ship, or helo. To perseve life and property at sea. To enforce polution laws. To conduct boardings of vessels at sea for safety and law violations. To ensure Aids to Navigations (Bouys) are in proper location and operating so vessels can travel safely. To operate Loran stations to help vessels know their location. To help defent the country against foes domestic and abroad. For some the purpose of the Coast Guard is to further their education or learn a new trade. It's all subjective and how you look at things. BY Tom :p
