Always check oil levels on flat road surface with engine turned off, preferably before 1st start of day or letting it sit for several minutes turned off. Oil should be between 2 marks. Never overfill oil, may blow seals(pressure), or foam up. Foam has air, air does not lubricate
There should be a sight glass on the left lower side of the motor. The oil should be visable in the glass.

If you wonder if you should I participate in barefoot running I would say no the risk involved is you can step on glass and twist your ancle, I would not recommand as the risk are too high.
