You may feel that it isn't "sporting" to do so, but the easiest way to catch really big largemouth bass in the summer is with live bait. Use Jumbo or Brooder shiners (5" to 10" long) hooked through their back behind their dorsil fin with a small diameter hook such as those used to catch Croppie ( white perch, sac-o-lait, crappie.....all the same fish). Use no weight, a slip cork that will go no deeper than 18", and fish prime feeding times....early morning at daybreak and late evening just before dark. I say you may not consider this sport, because it's so easy it's almost like "shooting fish". I actually just had great luck with a deepwater, 2 oz jug, red and white with a long feather tail. CAst vertically as far out as you can into deepwater, and bounce it slowly across te bottom. It was great. Happy times.
Bass spawn in spring so activity tends to increase. But my opinion is the fall. They like grouping in small schools near the bank in the early morning or evening to feed. Hope this helps.

A fishing rod is used with baits. There are several kinds bass baits used in bass fishing, and the bait you choose will depend on the time of year you're fishing, where in the water you want to fish, what the fish are currently eating, weather and time of year. You'll need to know the local law. Not all baits are allowed in all areas or at all times of year.
Live bait commonly consists of small fish, crayfish, frogs, leeches, polliwogs, salamanders and earthworms.
Hard baits are solid and made from artificial material. Top water baits skim the surface of the water. Diving baits are broken down into categories such as shallow, medium and deep diving based on the depth they dive while being reeled in. There are crank, rip, spoons, blades, jigs and many more.
Soft baits mimic the soft bodies of live bait. They are broken into categories such as tube, jerk, goby and grub. These baits are generally used to fish the bottom of a lake.
Soft plastics work very well in warm water. Some of the best are plastic worms, lizards, and crayfish imitators.
Striped bass actually bite as good in winter as other times. Only difference is fish a bit deeper with live shad or shiners, set lines at 15-25 feet deep.
For largemouth, smallmouth or spotted bass, use deep, suspending jerkbaits such as Lucky Craft's Pointer, or Smithwick's Rattlin' Rogue.
Slow, deep diving crankbaits will produce a few hits, as will jigs and shaky head worms.
