yes California has been admitted as free state because when the compromise was enacted there were some restrictions that stated that all states that were to enter the union would be a free state to lower the amount of slavery in the south. also there was really no need for slaves in the west because of the hot climate. in addition with the compromise of 1850 Washington also became a free state but still allowed to have slaves just not being able to sell or buy hopefully this answer will help many people.

In February of 1848, Mexico and the United States signed a treaty which ended the Mexican War and yielded a vast portion of the Southwest, including present day California, to the United States. Several days earlier, January 24, 1848, gold had been discovered on the American River near Sacramento, and the ensuing gold rush hastened California's admittance to the Union. With the Gold Rush came a huge increase in population and a pressing need for civil government.

In 1849, Californians sought statehood and, after heated debate in the U.S. Congress arising out of the slavery issue, California entered the Union as a free, nonslavery state by the Compromise of 1850.

California became a state as a result of the Mexican American War. The U.S wanted the Mexican territory because they wanted to border the Pacific Ocean and build ports to trade with Japan and China. They tried buying Alta California (The original name when it was Mexican territory) in 1835, and tried again in 1845, but Mexico declined. Later, a war was declared. The war ended when both countries signed a treaty, giving Alta California to the U.S.
