Like many hurricanes, Hurricane Irene started as an are of showers and thunderstorms, called a tropical disturbance, that moved off the east coast of Africa. It fed on the moist air over the warm waters of the tropical Atlantic Ocean, causing it to gain strength and organize. It became quite strong, producing gale-force winds before its circulation fully developed. After 5 days at sea it organized into a moderate tropical storm and was named Irene. After another two days, Irene had further strengthened into a hurricane. As Irene reached the west side of the Atlantic, large scale wind patterns steered it to the north, moving the storm up the East Coast.
