The answer to this question depends on the social status of the women. Wealthy plantation wives lived very well. They had slaves to take care of the children, house slaves to cook and clean, and they could afford the most current fashions copied from the European fashion magazines. Poor southern white women lived a very different life. Their lives were very similar to the northern farmer wife. Both women had to make their own clothing, churn butter, do the wash, take care of the children, help with the farm, make candles, chop wood, carry water . Wealthy northern women in cities lived very well and had dresses made to copy the European fashions like the plantation women. They didn't have slaves, but they did hire people to do work for them. Wealthy women in both the south and north did have dances and go to events. The plantation usually were distant from other people so often when people came to visit they stayed several days.
