Some reasons the colonists overthrew the British were because of being overtaxed, being forced to house British soldiers, and limited freedoms (press, speech, etc.) They were also not represented in Britain so some colonists felt England had no right to tax them ("No taxation without representation").

Like stated in the Declaration of Independence;

1)- they felt that Britain wasn't allowing the colonies to have all of the freedoms they would have if they were independent

2)- they felt that King George lll wasn't being fair, and believed that, based on their experiences with monarchys, they weren't being governed justly

Along with these things, colonists felt that taxes on goods were becoming outragous.

(look up townsend act, sugar act, tea act, and stamp act)

These along with a few other reasons, is why colonists started to protest and rise up against British rule, later on leading to the consideration of indepence, and the beliefs that the only way to get what they were seeking in a proper government was to create it themselves.
