Perhaps a hundred thousand years ago, modern humans arrived in India, they were of African origin and had mtDNA type L3. Over time, they split into two groups, mtDNA type M in the north (60% of modern Indian people have this mtDNA type) and mtDNA type N in the south. Type M (and its offshoots) is typical of Andamanese, Tibetans, Japanese, East Asians in general and Native Americans. Type N gave rise to some of the oldest mtDNA haplogroups found in Europe and the Near East. Modern humans were living in India both before and after the Toba eruption in Indonesia 76,000 years ago.

Around 40,000 years ago, a group split off from the ancestral South Indians and began to move north. They entered southeast Asia and Indonesia, to return later to India when sea levels rose around 11,500 BC and flooded their Indonesian coastal settlements, giving the basis for the Kumari Kantam origin story of the Dravidian speakers.

The same end-of-the-Ice-Age floods deposited the reed raft of a Tamil royal family (of Manu and Ikshvaku) in North India. They settled at Ayodhya in Uttar Pradesh, India, where Ikshvaku founded the solar dynasty and the Jain religion. It was Ikshvaku who taught his people agriculture, animal care, Martial Arts and the use of an archaic form of Brahmi script called Indus script. Ikshvaku's numerous descendants fought with the Dasyus and Asuras, carrying on the battle begun by Indra thousands of years previously, so that these groups were forced out of Pakistan and India into Bactria-Margiana and eventually the Middle East.

Ikshvaku's descendant Rama divided Aryavarta (North India and Pakistan) between his twin sons, Kush and Luv. Kush was given the kingdom west of Ayodhya, and Luv was given the region east of Ayodhya (hence Laos is still known as Luvpradesh).

Rama's descendant Krishna constructed an artificial island called Dwarka in the Rann of Kutch, which island was used as a port and center of government. A severe earthquake around 5600 BC submerged Dwarka and rerouted the Ghaggar-Hakra river, causing mass famine and huge migrations out of the area into the Middle East and Europe, (Russia and Greece in particular.)

Eventually the remnants of Krishna's people formed a culture in Pakistan and Northwest India that reached a height during the Bronze Age; the Indus Valley civilization, which went into decline around 1900 BC after severe floods and droughts caused an exodus from the area.

Buddhism arose in India, possibly as an offshoot of Jainism, and became well-established in Asia.

Alexander of Macedon conquered India during the Iron Age, but the Greeks did not hold India long.

Persian and Central Asian Muslims also conquered India, and their influence has been remarkable, particularly as to architecture and art. The British were the last group of foreign invaders to take control of India. They looted the country, but also put a stop to the practices of human sacrifice and suttee.

In 1947, India and Pakistan were divided by the British, and Pakistan has remained autonomous since that time. Modern India is 80% Hindu and 20% Muslim, but Pakistan is now a Muslim state with few religious minorities.
