What makes Barack Obama a hero?

First, it should be noted that Barack Obama is not a hero in the classic sense. In other words, historically, "hero" was applied to famous generals or to men or women who rescued a large number of people during a crisis; these days, the word has been expanded to include celebrities, athletes, and famous pop culture figures, and many of us think that "hero" has become over-used. That said, Barack Obama is more of an inspirational figure, rather than a heroic one. He is a very successful politician and quite good at what he does. Since he is biracial (his father was a black African, and he was raised by a white single mom), his success has been inspiring to a number of people, including many young people of color.
