It is probably because your car is pinging, so your ECU is pulling timing to avoid the damaging consequences. Try a higher octane to see if it helps your problem.
With the age of the car, it may also be a good idea to replace the fuel filter. If you cannot clean the injectors, run some fuel injector cleaner through the engine as well.
It makes about 131 hp
same as the 1994
1990 2365 lbs. 1994 2490 lbs.

Struts could of gone bad, otherwise its a miata....not meant for the hearty ones
A 1994 Mazda Miata's automatic transmission may slip in 4th gear if the bands are heavily worn. When the bands become worn, they are unable to grip properly and cause slippage.
Lefty loosey, righty tighty.
Many different engines can fit into the Miata. See the link below to Flyin' Miata, a company that does such engine repalcements.
10W30 or 5W30 will work just fine.
The 1989-1993 Miata came with a 1.6L DOHC and made around 120 hp. The 1994-1998 Miata came with a 1.8L DOHC and made around 131 hp. The 1999-2005 Miata came with a (updated) 1.8L DOHC and made around 142 hp. The 2006-present Miata came with a 2.0L DOHC and made around 170 hp.
