There are generally two types of cells: prokaryotes and eukaryotes. Both types must have the following:

1. a control center (DNA), either encapsulated by an independent membrane, or without the membrane. When it has a membrane, the control center is called a nucleus. Without the membrane it is called nucleoid.

2. cytoplasm (where the chemical reactions take place and where the organelles are found)

3. a cell membrane (to control what comes in / out of the cell)

4. organelles - smaller parts inside the cell that do the work of the cell, like ribosomes

A prokaryote has a nucleoid, and a eukaryote has a nucleus. Plant and animal cells are eukaryote, but bacteria are prokaryote.

Hope that helps.
