because of something called inertia. Stuff don't like change, and the heavier they are the less they like it. Means that if they are moving they want to keep moving, if they are stationary they want to stay stationary. getting something heavy that's in motion to stop takes effort, just as it takes effort to get it to stop as well. They also have metal wheels, which have a lot less traction than a rubber car tire.
