Diamonds are formed by tremendous pressure under the earth's surface which causes carbon to crystallize. When this happens in the presence of certain trace elements, a distortion of the normal crystallization process can occur and result in the beautiful colors seen in some rare and expensive diamonds.

What makes green diamonds green?

According to Wikipedia, the Dresden Green Diamond, the most famous green diamond, owes its "...unique apple green color is due to natural exposure to radioactive materials..." Some green diamonds are made more green after being irradiated in order to enhance its colour. This process treats or enhances a diamond, and therefore, makes it less valuable than a naturally coloured diamond. A certified gemologist can identify such diamonds.

If you mixed the color lavender with color red and with color white what color would come out?

Mixing lavender with red would give you a pink. Mixing with white would give a cooler pink. All colour names are to some extent subjective.

How can I tell if the stones in my ring are real diamonds?

Real diamonds will cut glass, though there is speculation that some fake diamonds can cut glass, and that you can damage a real diamond by cutting glass with it. Another way to tell is to hold the diamond up in the light. If you see any orange color from the diamond, it is fake, as real diamonds have every color EXCEPT orange.

Why do some diamonds have color?

During the formation process -- from carbon -- diamonds can include other minerals, including nitrogen = yellow; boron = blue; nickel, and neighborhood radiation = green and so forth. Brown diamonds occur when the diamond molecular structure is flawed. Other colours -- pink and purple, for example, are currently attributed to plastic deformation after being formed that occurs when the material is erupted to earth's surface. The GIA lists 27 different colours and shades of colours, depending on the intensity of the colour.

Why chemist needed to make industrial diamonds?

Because some industrial diamonds are not naturally-occurring diamonds, a chemist is required to formulate the recipe for materials necessary to fabricate man-made diamonds.

Are pink diamonds or yellow diamonds more expensive?

Natural pink diamonds are more rare than natural yellow diamonds, probably because the common trace element nitrogen is responsible for a yellow cast in a diamond. Some colourless or 'white' diamonds are considered yellow, when graded with a colour grade from I to Z, as below. Natural pink diamonds exist 'due to structural anomalies" according to Wikipedia, and are very rare. Some diamonds can be altered (or enhanced) to appear yellow or pink, and when altered, are less valuable than naturally colored diamonds.
