What is referred to as the British Isles consists of the the two large islands of Britain and Ireland and the many surrounding islands. They are situated off the northwest coast of mainland Europe, and stand out as a noticeable group. They are not a region as such, as there are separate and individual countries within them. The British Isles is just purely a geographic term, used because Britain is the largest of the close group of islands. See the map below:
