Depends on who is giving you the definition, and a lot on the traditions in many countries. Traditionally, a family unit is made up of mother, father, and children. Some countries widen the definition to grandparents or cousins, and have a lot more family members that live together. If you aren't married, or you have a non-traditional household, the definition for you might be different. I am not married, and I live with my unmarried brother... we are sort of a family unit, because we are related, share houshold responsibilities, go grocery shopping together, share ownership of some of our books and movies, are given gifts as a group, etc. ... But it is a non-permanent situation. He'll probably get a job and a girlfriend and move on someday. :) So, things like that come into play all the time when people argue about how to define a family. Some people will also insist that pets are included as part of the definition.

The family is an institution that makes up the society. As a matter of fact, the basic unit of any society is the nuclear family.
I believe a human family unit is the same pretty much everywhere. It consists of a father, a mother and possibly some children. In the smallest unit, even a childless husband and wife are a 'family unit' .
