Does the airplane still impact the US today?

The invention of the airplane by the Wright brothers had an impact on the world ever since it was invented. Today, in the US and the rest of the world, the airplane is a means of transportation that takes less time than any other type of transportation. Planes can travel thousands of miles without refueling. The airplane has also made an ongoing impact on military weapons. War time use of the airplane was extensive during WW 1. Todays jet powered military aircraft are powerful military weapons.

How have airplanes changed since the first airplane?

You could fill several volumes listing ALL the differences between the wright flyer and a modern-day airplane... But here are a few of the major differences. The wright flyer was constructed with wood and canvas whereas most modern planes are made of aluminum or modern composite materials. The wright flyer was of a canard-type design. With the elevators on the front of the aircraft. Most modern aircraft put the elevators on the tail of the aircraft. The wright flyer, rather than having ailerons like modern aircraft, simply warped the lightweight wings to achieve banking control. The wright flyer used a sprocket chain-drive like a bicycle to power to propellors from a single engine. This configuration is never used in modern aircraft. The wright flyer required a set of rails (made from 2x4s) to launch from rather than the wheeled landing gear you see on modern airplanes. Pilots flying the wright flyer lay head-first in a prone position. There was no cockpit as such, this is obviously much different than any modern aircraft. The wright flyer was controlled by the pilot using an odd "cradle" arrangement attached to his hips to actuate roll and yaw simultaneously. Modern aircraft use a yoke or a stick and rudder pedals.

What tools did the Wright brothers use to make the first plane?

On December 17, 1903, Orville Wright piloted the first powered airplane 20 feet above a wind-swept beach in North Carolina. The flight lasted 12 seconds and covered 120 feet. Three more flights were made that day with Orville's brother Wilbur piloting the record flight lasting 59 seconds over a distance of 852 feet. The brothers began their experimentation in flight in 1896 at their bicycle shop in Dayton, Ohio. They selected the beach at Kitty Hawk as their proving ground because of the constant wind that added lift to their craft. In 1902 they came to the beach with their glider and made more than 700 successful flights.

How did the wright brothers use the scienific method?

The Wright Brothers studied the flight of birds in order to understand how they fly and then applied what they learned to airplane designs.

Why the wright brothers invente this airplane?

Strangely enough, the Wright Brothers did not invent the airplane! Don't believe it? Do your homework. Airplane flights of 2 hours and longer were quite common before the Brothers got off the ground. Technology and Physics of lift and wing shapes was already proven and in use. Getting airborne with self-contained power was the only missing link.

Why was the invention of the airplane by the wright brothers so important?

It was so important because it was the first Airplane to be built. This changed the way we people use transportation, and made traveling a lot easier.

When did the army first use an airplane?

The Wright Brothers first flew their powered airplane in 1903. They demonstrated it for the Army and eventually the Army ordered some. This became known as the Model 1911 Wright flyer. During test trials, Orville Wright took Lt. Thomas E. Selfridge up for a flight on Sept 17, 1909 and he crashed. Orville was trapped in his seat and badly injured. Lt. Selfridge the first person to die in an airplane crash.
