Most oil pans are made of steel, but aluminum is also a possibility.
pan is not made of oil, but people usually put oil on it so cooking wouldn't stick to the pan.
You may need to reseal the oil pan
the back of your oil pan may have a hole or the gasket may be ruined. when you get under the car look upa toward the top rear of the oil pan. if you see oil residue. you may need a gasket or an oil pan.
check the oil sending unit. check the ring of bolts around the oil pan they may be loose if they arent then you may have to replace the oil pan gasket
Drain the oil from the Cherokee engine. Remove the oil pan bolts and lower the pan. you may need to unbolt the motor mounts and raise the engine slightly to get the pan out. Clean all of the pan gasket from the pan and the block. Put the pan back on with a new gasket then fill with fresh oil.
The drain plug is right on the oil pan. The oil pan is made out of a solid cast iron and you might not find it right away. The good this is that the oil filter is right by the oil pan. :) Good luck.

Drain the oil from your oil pan. Remove the oil pan bolts. There are 24 oil pan bolts. The oil pan will come off.
Drain the engine oil. Remove the pan bolts. The engine may have to be unbolted from the motor mounts and lifted slightly to remove the pan. Pull the pan out, then install the new pan and gasket.
