This varies by country; in the US there is no difference in literacy rates, between men and women. In some countries it is believed that it is more important to educate men than to educate women, because men will have a wide variety of jobs, which may be intellectually demanding, whereas women will just be housewives, which does not require them to read. We have seen that in Afghanistan, for example, women seeking an education are often assaulted or murdered, for daring to step outside of what is considered to be their obligatory social role, as ignorant housewives.
