The band was born in 1992, created by Adam Gontier, Neil Sanderson, Brad Walst and Joe Grant, under the name 'Groundswell' but they split up in 1997. Later that same year the band regrouped with all the same band members, except for Joe Grant who left the band to go to law school and become a lawyer, and they called themselves 'Three Days Grace'.
Adam Gontier left Three Days Grace in January 2013 to focus on his health and personal issues. He cited struggles with addiction and the need to take time away from the band for his well-being. His departure marked a significant change for the band, leading to the recruitment of new lead vocalist Matt Walst. Gontier later pursued a solo career and formed a new band, Saint Asonia.
