Why does lightning seem to strike tall objects?

Electricity seeks the path of lowest resistance. Arcing to a tall (typically wet) thing usually has a much lower electrical resistance than arcing through the air to the ground. Last time I read about it we were not entirely sure how electrical paths are "chosen" by lightning - speculation includs air ionized by cosmic rays or some such thing - but if that path comes close enough to a tall object it will be a preferred path.

What is restriking voltage?

Restriking voltage is transient voltage. During the arcing time, at current zero, the voltage that shows up across the contacts is the restriking voltage.

How do plasma cutters work?

Plasma cutters work by shooting a high-pressure gas through a hose and arcing electricity through the gas to create plasma. Basically, plasma cutters used high temperature gas and electricity to cut through metals.

Why is only silk used to rub against glass in generating static electricity?

Silk is both excellent at insulating the charge from arcing, and at taking excess electrons, allowing the charge to build up on your object. Thus if you rub an object with out touching it directly in silk, it will progressively lose electrons and build up a static charge.

Can electric fields be seen by the human eyes?

I remember an experiment I did at school about magnetic fields. We had a sheet of waxed paper on which we scattered iron filings. when a magnet was placed under the paper, the iron filings would jump to each pole but would leave arcing trails, showing the extent of the magnetic range. No idea about electricity though!

What is arcing in gas engine?

If I understand your question correctly, arcing is when an electrical charge jumps inside the distributor from the main electrical prong to the prongs that supply electric power to the spark plugs.Hope this helped,Evan

What is arching in electricity?

Arcing is electrical current jumping across a gap, or creating an arc, as in a spark plug firing, or lightning arcing across the sky.

What could be the cause of arcing between the buss bar and a breaker?

Arcing is caused by a poor electrical connection. The breaker is not making good contact with the buss bar. Try replacing the breaker.

What is arcing length in steel melting?

Please rephrase the question. Are you describing an electrical furnace or the welding process?

What are arcing contacts?

Whenever an electrical contact is made or broken, an electrical spark jumps through the air between the two contact points while they are very close together but not yet, or not any longer, touching. That spark jumping is an electrical arc and the event is arcing contact. The main cause of arcing is the property of a circuit to maintain the continuity of the current, so whenever the contacts separate to break the circuit the air (or any dielectric medium that is used) ionises and continuity of the current is maintained, at least momentarily.

Do electrical plugs cause sparks that start fires?

they can because bad contacts can cause arcing which can ignite combustible material near by.

Why loose car battery connections gets hot?

Arcing. The electrical current jumps across the air gap in the loose connection. This creates heat. .

To avoid arcing connect sutable value of in earthing?

To avoid arcing, it is important to connect a suitable value of grounding or earthing. This helps to provide a path of low resistance for any electrical faults or surges, diverting the excess current away from sensitive equipment or components. The appropriate value of grounding or earthing can vary depending on the specific electrical system, so it is important to consult with a professional to determine the correct value for your setup.

How was the light switch created?

The original light switch was invented in 1884 by John Holmes. This switch was made to prevent "arcing" of the electrical circuit, and the design is still in use today.

Why has the earth wire turned black?

electrical arcing will cause the wire to blacken (the black is carbon buildup from the arc). The copper may also react to the air, salt, etc. similar to pennies and darken.

Should a 24vdc circuit create arcing to use as a switch or signal?

Some voltage must be present but the current causes the arcing.
