It sounds like a spark problem. Check if there is spark. Suspect the coil. Then inspect the fuel system, may not be getting fuel. Check fuel pump.
A bad crankshaft in a 96 Altima could cause the engine not to start. Depending on the crank damage, the engine could start but not run properly.
There are many different reasons why the Nissan Altima won't start. It could have a dead battery, a bad starter or even the engine. It is best to take it to a mechanic for them to diagnose the problem.
The most common reason for an engine to turn over but not start is a lack of fuel. The fuel tank might be empty or the fuel pump might not be working.

One way to tell if the timing chain is broken on your Nissan Altima is to see if it will start. If it starts, it is not the timing chain. You can also remove the distributor cap, have someone step on the gas while you watch the engine. If the rotor moves, it is not the timing chain.
