What might have caused the daylight to be prolonged in the book of Joshua in the Bible?

It was a miracle from God. I mean He spoke everything into existence. How hard could it have been for Him to prolong a day until the Israelites had prevailed in the battle.
The intriguing point in that story in that it was the first time God actually listened to mankind. Why did He listen to sinful man? I guess God is telling us He would stop the world for his elect. He must have stopped the world for those who He saved and the lesson is He will listen to His elect.
Interestingly, the prolonged day is confirmed in Native American lore and the inscriptions of other ancient peoples.
