Midway was an Army air corp base and it had to be taken for Japan to threaten Hawaii and the American Pacific fleet Naval base at Pearl Harbor. Midway was generally midway between Japan and Hawaii - hence the name. Had the Japanese has success it could have prolonged the war for years.
Midway marked an important turning point in the war in the Pacific. Had the Japanese captured Midway and succeeded in destroying the carriers of the Pacific Fleet, Hawaii would have come under serious threat and the war possibly extended for months. With their loss at Midway, the threat to Hawaii was removed and Japan lost precious ships and highly-skilled aviators it could not easily replace.

Hawaii stands between the United States (mainland) and Japan. It is somewhat closer to North America. Midway Island is actually a group of small islands almost exactly halfway between the West Coast of the United States and Japan.
They were ideal locations for ports and aircraft refueling. Both provided excellent staging areas if a nation were to attack. Japan wanted to rule the Pacific, and tried to take Hawaii so that they would have more control. Because of differences in aircraft and nuclear war ships, Hawaii and Midway are not as strategically important as they were before, but they still allow a nation to have military influence in the Pacific.
