When the US dropped the bombs on Hirshima and Nagasaki, millions of Allied military were beginning to close in on Japan for an invasion. Meanwhile, the Japanese military was preparing for the Japanese soldiers and civilians to commit suicide by repulsing the coming invasion. Millions of Allied and Japanese people would have been killed if the invasion had occurred.

After the war, several high-ranking Japanese Navy officers said that the dropping of the bombs was a good thing, They knew that, otherwise, millions of their people would be killed, and more would starve to death. Fewer than 100,000 Japanese were killed by the bombs . . . that is horrific, but much, much preferable than millions dying.

Millions would have died, both American and Japanese. The death toll associated with invading Japan is staggering. Also, had we not tried to end the war with Japan as quickly as possible Russia would have entered the war against Japan. AMerica did not want the Soviets to carve up Japan like they did in Europe and East Germany. Stalin aggreed to enter the war 6 months after the defeat of Germany. Time was running out. Those two facts made President Truman mind up to approve the use of the atomic bombs.
